Philosophies and Conceptual Models

Our PRPs blend a number of viewpoints regarding care of the client in order to provide the best treatment possible. Here are a few of the models that influence our services:

The Recovery Model: Recently adopted by the State of Maryland (and rapidly spreading across the country as a whole), the recovery model seeks to place treatment goals and choices in the hands of consumers. In this model, clients have the primary role in choosing the path of their recovery plans. Key Point PRPs have always had a focus on empowering clients to take control of their own destiny. Our PRPs feature client advisory boards that make major programmatic and disciplinary decisions, client-run morning meetings, and client choice in fieldtrips. Recently our staffs have been trained in the WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) model – a step-by-step process for allowing clients to develop resources for how to keep themselves well and what to do when they are not. The Aberdeen PRP has implemented a client-decorated clubhouse and launched client-run afternoon clubs. We continue the work of integrating the recovery model more and more deeply into our work. The basic idea of rehabilitation supports the return of clients to the community in which they live. Life skills training, supported employment, social skills training, and more all help clients to reintegrate into society.

Holistic Health Perspective: Healthy people require a balanced approach addressing mind, body, and spirit. Our programs have always featured mind-stimulating classes like psychology 101, drug and alcohol education (MISA), and art. We have also always offered health and exercise classes. More recently our PRPs have added optional classes discussing spiritual matters for clients so inclined in a recognition that persons coming from institutional backgrounds and lacking sufficient transportation are often cut off from their spirituality. The Aberdeen PRP has launched weekly trips to the YMCA, a music class, and a yoga class. We are also seeking sources of funding or gifts for scientifically proven alternative approaches in mental health such as biofeedback equipment and full spectrum lighting for seasonal depression.

Medical Model: Key Point PRPs are connected to mental health clinics staffed by psychiatrists and licensed psychotherapists. All PRP clients have psychiatrists and therapists. Our PRPs coordinate case management with clinics, care providers, residential facilities, and other involved parties to ensure seamless treatment. Escalation procedures are in place for handling suicidality, increases in symptoms, and emergencies requiring hospitalization. Rehabilitation counselors are trained to recognize increased agitation, suicidal threats, and other unusual behaviors and take steps to address.
